Paul Joskow

Paul Lewis Joskow became President of the Alfred P Sloan Foundation on January 1, 2008 [http://www.sloan.org] . He is also the Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics and Management at MIT (on leave) [http://econ-www.mit.edu/files/2153] . He has served on the MIT faculty since 1972. From 1994 through 1998 he was Head of the MIT Department of Economics. From 1999 through 2007 he was the Director of the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research.

In his research and teaching, Joskow focuses on industrial organization, government regulation of industry, competition policy, and energy and environmental economics.

Personal Life and Education

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Joskow was raised in Queens and attended Francis Lewis High School. He received a BA from Cornell University in 1968 and a PhD in Economics from Yale University in 1972. Joskow was also a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Paris - Dauphine in 2007.

In 1978 Joskow married Barbara Chasen, and the couple currently reside in both Boston and New York City. They have one daughter, Suzanne Zoe Joskow, born in 1983. She graduated from Yale College in 2005 and now works in Hollywood, CA.

He is a Director of Exelon Corporation and TransCanada Corporation, as well as a Trustee of the Putnam Mutual Funds. He previously served as a Director of the New England Electric System, State Farm Indemnity Company, National Grid plc, and the Whitehead Institute of Biomedical Research. Joskow is also a Fellow of the Econometric Society, the Industrial Organization Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences [http://www.amacad.org/] .
