Its seat is the town of Iłowa, which lies approximately convert|15|km|mi|0 south-west of Żagań and convert|53|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-west of Zielona Góra.

The gmina covers an area of convert|153.05|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 7,111 (out of which the population of Iłowa amounts to 3,975, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 3,136).
