Backbase is a computer software company specialized in creating Ajax-based rich Internet applications. It was founded in 2003 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Its headquarters is in San Mateo, California, with its software development center in Amsterdam. History

Backbase was founded in 2003 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Jouk Pleiter and Gerbert Kaandorp to develop an Ajax framework using HTML, JavaScript and CSS. Backbase used the term Rich Internet Applications to classify its software. In February 2005 Jesse James Garrett coined the term Ajax, after which the classification "Ajax-based Rich Internet Applications" was adopted. In May 2005 the Backbase Community Edition was launched, supported by the Backbase Developer Network [ [http://bdn.backbase.com Backbase Developer Network ] ] . In January 2006 Backbase opened an office in San Mateo, California. In August 2006 the headquarters was moved to San Mateo, with the European headquarters and software development still in Amsterdam. In 2006 and 2007 additional offices were opened in the US and Europe.

Products

Enterprise Ajax Framework

"Backbase Enterprise Ajax" is an Ajax Framework that is heavily XML-based, and supports many open standards, such as XML, XSLT, XPath, XInclude, DOM Level 3, SMIL and JSF. It provides a cross-browser compatibility layer, Ajax client runtime, Ajax widgets, Server-side JSF runtime and development tools. Developers can use XML tags, JavaScript or JavaServer Faces to develop Ajax applications with Backbase. It can be used with any server-side scripting and programming language, such as JSP, Struts, Spring or PHP.

Visual Ajax Builder

"Backbase Visual Ajax Builder" is a WYSIWYG Ajax development environment based on the Eclipse Framework. It includes 3 main panels:

* The palette
* The editor (design and source view)
* The properties editor

The palette contains HTML tags and Backbase Ajax tags, which can be dragged into the editor. The editor provides a WYSIWYG view and a source view. The properties editor allows editing of the properties of the selected item. The Visual Ajax Builder is currently in beta (January 2007).

Rich Applications

"Backbase Rich Applications" are designed to enable companies to interact with their online customers more effectively. The Rich Applications are built on top of the Enterprise Ajax framework.
