Its seat is the town of Świecie, which lies approximately convert|45|km|mi|0 north of Toruń and convert|45|km|mi|0|abbr=on north-east of Bydgoszcz.

The gmina covers an area of convert|174.81|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 32,866 (out of which the population of Świecie amounts to 25,614, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 7,252).
