He also participated in nine World ChampionshipFormula One Grands Prix, debuting onJuly 11 ,1964 . He scored no championship points. He also participated in numerous non-Championship Formula One races. He won the 1971 and 1972Formula 5000 championships. He also won theBritish Touring Car Championship title on 3 occasions in 1967, 1968 and 1973, the first two in aFord and the last in aChevrolet . After returning to Australia in the mid-1970s Gardner won the 1977Australian Sports Sedan Championship driving a highly modifiedChevrolet Corvair .Before taking up motor racing he had been a boxer and surf lifesaver.
