Burning Coal Theatre Company is a professional theatre company based in Raleigh, North Carolina. They are a member of the national Theatre Communications Group for non-profit professional theatres, as well as the North Carolina Theatre Conference. Burning Coal has non-profit [501 (c) (3)] status.[ [http://www.burningcoal.org/mission.html Burning Coal] ] ]The company is noted in the Research Triangle area for the fresh and innovative content it brings to the local theatre scene. Unusually among smaller city arts groups, Burning Coal received grants from the City of Raleigh Arts Commission before opening, the decision being based upon the group's grant proposal and the resume's of the founders, Jerome Davis and Simmie Kastner. In 2008 they completed renovation of and moved into the historic Murphey School Auditorium (now renamed "Meymandi Theatre at the Murphey School").
Their programming includes a 4 or 5 play mainstage season, education outreach programs to elementary, middle and high school students across central North Carolina, a second stage series for emergent artists, a schools' tour of a classic play each year, adult education classes, a Summer Theatre Conservatory for middle school students and another for high school students, a summer music series and a lobby lecture series.
In its first decade, Burning Coal worked with some of the nation's finest theatre artists, including Adrian Hall, Kent Paul, Samm-Art Williams, Rebecca Holderness, Randolph Curtis Rand, Matthew Earnest, ED Intemann, Rob Andrusko, Matthew Adelson, Liz Beckham, Gip Hoppe and Beth London.
Venue
Burning Coal is the resident company at the Meymandi Theatre at the Murphey School. This venue opened in January 2008 (with a production of "Inherit the Wind" [http://www.newsobserver.com/lifestyles/arts_entertainment/theater_reviews/story/928930.html] ) after several years of fundraising to restore the space. The theater is a flexible black-box space, built in what had previously been the auditorium of the historic Murphey Elementary School.
