Nicolangelo Carnimeo

Nicolangelo Carnimeo

Nicolangelo Carnimeo (Bari 1887 - Naples 1965) was an Italian lieutenant-general; later a legal-administrative judge and then a member of Parliament of the Italian Republic.

Graduated in law and political sciences he was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Italian Army in 1909.

Carnimeo served during both the Italo-Turkish War and the First World War.

From 1940 to 1941, during the Second World War, he was general Officer Commanding 2nd Colonial Division in East Africa & general Officer Commanding X Territorial Defence Command. He led the brilliant if doomed Italian defence in the Battle of Keren, one of the major feats of arms of Italy in World War II.

He himself highly estimated in return the bravery of the Indian troops in the British service he faced in the Italian East Africa.
