* May 16 — The National Assembly of Nigeria votes against a constitutional amendment to remove term limits; President Obasanjo is prevented from contesting a third term in office.

* June 13 — President Olusegun Obasanjo meets with his Cameroonian counterpart Paul Biya, and UN Secretary General, Kofi Anan in New York to resolve dispute talks over Bakassi.

August

* August 1 — Nigerian troops begin to pull out of Bakassi; Bakassi becomes Cameroonian territory.
