She is descended from the Ghanaian Lieutenant Governor of the formerBritish Gold Coast ,James Bannerman , whose mother was a Fanti fromCape Coast and whose father was aScot from Edinburgh. Bannerman was born and raised inGloucester , where she attended St Peter's Roman Catholic School. She spent time acting there and later joined the Everyman Youth Theatre inCheltenham before beginning a degree in modern European literature at theUniversity of Reading . Further appearances include a brief role in "Red Dwarf "—in a scene that took a day to shoot—and a recurring role in the third series of "Cold Feet " as Jessica Barnes, a local political activist who has an affair with David Marsden (played byRobert Bathurst ). Her audition for the part was "shrouded in secrecy" and required a lengthy make-up process; the prosthetics took three hours to apply and 90 minutes to remove. Further involvement in the "Doctor Who" franchise includes a guest role in theaudio drama "The Bride of Peladon " and a part in the "Torchwood " episode "They Keep Killing Suzie ".Bannerman is married to Toby, with two children, Oskar and Thalia.
