John Leggott College is a highly-regarded
sixth form college on "West Common Lane", in Brumby,Scunthorpe ,North Lincolnshire , UK. It is situated near toNorth Lindsey College .History
The college began in 1964 as the John Leggott Grammar School with 600 pupils for ages 11-18. The sixth form college was established in 1968, when education in Scunthorpe was reorganised. It is commonly known as JLC, and now has about 2000 pupils.
Performance
The college is one of the best performing 6th form colleges in the country and rarely leaves the top 10 sixth form colleges in national A-level results. The college is of beacon standard and is a winner of many prestigious prizes in the country. [ [http://www.leggott.ac.uk/sections/beacon/awards/awards_main.html Beacon Status page at leggott.ac.uk] ] It is not a typical further education college, in that it concentrates on A levels (academic subjects, not vocation courses such as NVQ). North Lindsey College next door offers more vocational courses. Some of the A-level courses available at John Leggott ask for certain GCSE results in order to be allowed onto the course and, in this way, it has characteristics of a selective school (as most sixth form colleges have). However, the college aims to accommodate all students, regardless of ability, and consequently offers a wide range of GCSE courses for people who wish to improve their previous result or indeed gain a qualification that was not on offer at their secondary education establishment. Students can take a combination of GCSE and A-level courses to suit their requirements.
Much of the college's success is associated with ex-principal
David Linnell OBE, who resigned at the end of December 2006 to take up a post at Cornwall College. He was replaced by [http://www.nicholasdakin.me.uk Nicholas Dakin] , former vice-principal and local Labour party leader, being the leader of North Lincolnshire Council from 1997-2003.The college has always received excellent reports from
