The Album

"Alkoholen delirium" ("Alcoholic Delirium") is the debut album of Bulgarian rock band Hipodil, released in 1993 under the now defunct Unison-RTM label. The album was released on audio cassette only and was never re-released on a CD though some tracks has been included in the band's Tu'pest compilation in 2000. The album immediately attracted the attention of the public with its explicit lyrics and unexpected musical content as punk music though not unknown in Bulgaria was rarely recorded and performed by local bands. However, the album also reflected the changes in Bulgaria which was desperately trying to cope with the legacy of Communist regime, overturned less than four years earlier. Hipodil enjoyed and even abused this newly bestowed freedom and that is quite visible in their otherwise poorly produced debut. They also rode the wave of the scandal which their lyrics inevitably provoked and soon the band had a cult following, mainly in Sofia and some other big cities of the country.

The Music

Though quite diverse, the music of the album was tightly connected to other acts' influences on Hipodil band members with Slayer and Judas Priest being the most prominent among them. Yet, by using Bulgarian-only lyrics, rich in slang and puns Hipodil managed to overshadow their music incapabilities and the poor production work. Unexperienced as they were, Hipodil smartly invited for the record sessions an assorted brass section, consisting of trained musicians and also hired a keyboard player which greatly added to their music's appeal. The biggest radio and TV hit to come out of the album was "Jenata" ("The Woman"), which was the first to get airplay (mainly because of the lack of too foul language) and even had a video (quite bad it was...) but the audience chose the quasi-ballad "Momicheto" ("The Girl") which quickly became a gig favorite despite (or maybe because) of the mysoginistic lyrics.
