- Adolphe Pinard
Adolphe Pinard (1844-1934) was a French
obstetrician who was a native ofMéry-sur-Seine . He practiced medicine inParis , where he was an assistant toÉtienne Stéphane Tarnier (1828-1897) and a professor ofobstetrics .Pinard was a pioneer of modern
perinatal care and the "puericulture movement" in French obstetrics. He made several contributions in his work involving pre-natal and maternal health, and was an advocate of providing social care for pregnant women from deprived environments. He established abdominal obstetricpalpation methods, and his name is associated with "Pinard's maneuvre", which is a technique used in breech extraction. In 1895 he devised a fetal stethoscope that is sometimes referred to as a "pinard".Today the "Maternité Adolphe-Pinard" in
Nancy and the Boulevard Adolphe Pinard in Paris are named after him. Thisboulevard is a boundary between Paris and the city ofMalakoff .References
