Sir John Bagot Glubb OBE , CMG and KCB and his wife, Muriel Rosemary Forbes. Sir John was commander of theArab Legion . Godfrey, accordingly grew up inTransjordan amongstBedouin soldiers and declared himself aMuslim as soon as he was old enough to do so. Glubb was sent to Wellington College where, deeply unhappy, he ran away, to the Jordanian
Embassy and themilitary attaché . He then went theSchool of Oriental and African Studies to studyArabic and became an activist, with theBertrand Russell Foundation , thePopular Front for the Liberation of Oman and the Arabian Gulf , and worked with the Omani opposition at theUnited Nations inNew York City .Career
Glubb reported in
Beirut during theLebanese Civil War , first forCBS and later for theDaily Mail as Michael O'Sullivan. He also reported forArab news agencies. When theIsraeli Government expelled thePalestinian leadership fromLebanon , Glubb, followed. His Arabicfluency and close relationship with thePopular Front for the Liberation of Palestine , with the writerGhasan Kanafani . He also published several books "Zionism is itracist ?", "The Palestine Question andInternational Law " and "Zionist Relations with Nazism." When he died, he was seeking hisdoctorate in Arabic at the School of Oriental and African studies about relationships betweenRichard the Lionheart andSaladin from Vatican documents.Death
He died in
Kuwait on 3 April 2004 as the result of ahit and run . He is survived by his second wife, Salwa and their two daughters Sarah and Darina,and his son Mark(Mubarak) by his first marriage. His mother Lady Rosemary Glubb survived him but has since died in September 2005.ources
