The Inner Northern Busway (INB) is a shorter, 4.7km long counterpart to the South-East Busway. Its completion in 2008 allowed buses to travel north/south through the Brisbane central business district without encountering car traffic.

History

The first section, from the intersection of Roma Street to Herston, opened in 2004. The second section opened on May 19, 2008 from Roma Street to the Queen Street Bus Station, linking it with the South-East Busway.

When first opened, the Inner-Northern Busway only had one station, QUT Kelvin Grove. Normanby and RCH Herston were opened in late 2005. Roma Street and King George Square stations became operational when the second section was opened to regular service in 2008.

The official opening on May 4, 2008 was celebrated with a public walkthrough and festivities. The ceremonial ribbon was cut by the Premier of Queensland Anna Bligh at the King George Square station.

Track

The Inner Northern Busway starts in a tunnel underneath Albert Street in the city centre adjacent to the Queen Street bus station, previously the terminus of the South-East Busway. It then proceeds north-west to the King George Square Bus Station, a large interchange with several stops on each of its two underground platforms.

The INB then surfaces near Roma Street railway station and follows the alignment of the main city train lines. Roma Street busway station is adjacent to the train platforms and is on the same level. Platform 2 is shared by both trains and buses (though the only train to currently use Platform 2 is the daily CountryLink XPT service from Sydney).

The busway then continues north alongside the Exhibition train line and then north-east through the Victoria Park Golf Complex, with stations adjacent to the Normanby Fiveways, the Queensland University of Technology campus at Kelvin Grove and the Royal Children's Hospital in the suburb of Herston. The busway ends a short distance beyond the RCH Herston station.

Future

The Inner Northern Busway is intended to connect to the Northern Busway. The first stage of the Northern Busway is currently under construction from the INB's northern terminus to Windsor along the Lutwyche Road corridor.
