Monilophyte refers to the monophyletic group of ferns, defined in a broad sense, which is sister group to the Spermatophytes within the Subdivision Euphyllophytes, within the Division Tracheophytes, by a consensus of recent molecular studies [Smith, A. R., K. M. Pryer, et al. (2006). "A classification for extant ferns." Taxon 55(3): 705-731] . There are four classes within this rank, Psilotopsida (which includes the Ophioglossales), Equisetopsida, Marattiopsida, and Polypodiopsida, with the Polypodiopsida containing the leptosporangiate ferns. The Euphyllophytes are sister to the Lycophytes
