- General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York
The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York was founded on 1785-11-17 to provide cultural, educational and social services to families of skilled craftsmen by twenty two artisans to promote the political and financial interests of craftsmen in America. Its members fought for protective tariffs and formed the Mechanics Bank to help meet the credit needs of artisans. It also built a series of impressive meeting halls and established a reputable school and a widely used apprentices’ library.
Its current headquarters is located at Twenty West Forty-fourth Street in Manhattan, across from the Harvard Club of New York.
Notable members included Stephen Allen and Andrew Carnegie.
The Society's Mossman Lock Museum contains more than 370 bank and vault locks, keys and tools dating from 4000 BC to the modern 20th-century. The museum is open to the public.
