Ripon Grammar School is a co-educational, selective, state secondary grammar school and specialist engineering college located in Ripon, North Yorkshire, England.

The school motto is the Old English phrase "Giorne ymb lare y diowatdomas" ("Eager to learn and seek after righteousness"). [ [http://www.ripongrammar.co.uk/ Ripon Grammar School] ] [ [http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/reports/121/121694.pdf Ripon Grammar School] OFSTED report]

History

The school was originally founded in Saxon times, it was re-founded in 1555 during the reign of Queen Mary. The school became coeducational in the 1960s. Although most pupils are day-pupils from the surrounding area and Ripon itself, there are an attached boys' and a separate girls' boarding houses.

Ripon was the first school catchment area in England in which parents voted to keep a selective school in 2000. [cite news |last= |first= |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/3906667.stm|title=Grammar schools reject changes

During 2005, Ripon Grammar celebrated the 450th anniversary of its re-founding in 1555. During this year, extensive fund-raising occurred, which is now being spent on many new projects to improve the school's facilities. One of the most ambitious being the building of a new classroom block, and another being the refurbishment of at least four science labs. In January 2006 the school was awarded specialist engineering status, which will help fund the improvement of facilities in the science and technology departments.

In May 2006 the school's librarian, Anne-Marie Tarter, was awarded the School Librarian of the Year Award by the School Library Association. [ [http://www.sla.org.uk/slya School Library Association] .]

In 2008 construction started on a new sports hall and 6th Form block.
