Joseph J. Roberts, Jr. (born July 14, 1952) is an American Democratic Party politician, who has served in the New Jersey General Assembly since 1987, where he represents the 5th legislative district.

Roberts became the Assembly Speaker at the start of the 2006-2007 session, replacing Albio Sires who stepped down as Speaker at the end of the previous term. Roberts served as the Assembly's Majority Leader from 2002-2006, as the Minority Budget Officer from 1996-1998 and as Assistant Minority Leader 1994-1995. He has been a member of the Democratic National Committee since 2001 and was Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee from 2001-2002. Roberts was the Chair of the Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders from 1980-1987. He served on the Bellmawr Borough Council from 1977-1980 and on the Bellmawr Board of Education from 1976-1977. Assemblyman Roberts graduated with a B.A. from Rutgers University in Political Science and received an M.A. from the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania in Administration.

He was one of the major players in the 2006 New Jersey State Government shutdown.

District 5

Each of the forty districts in the New Jersey Legislature has one representative in the New Jersey Senate and two members in the New Jersey General Assembly. The other representatives from the 5th District for the 2008-2009 legislative session are:

*Assemblywoman Nilsa Cruz-Perez
