He originally started his career with Manchester City, but moved on to Cardiff City in 1981, without making any first team appearances, on a free transfer where he linked up with his brother Dave.
He left Cardiff for £65,000 in July 1984 to join Sunderland. Bennett went on to play 369 league games with Sunderland scoring 23 goals before joining Carlisle United 11 years later. He now works as a radio pundit and has regularly commentates on Sunderland games. His son has recently joined the academy of Middlesbrough F.C. a local rival to his former team Sunderland
