Tinsukia is a city and a municipal board in Tinsukia district in the Indian state of Assam.

Tinsukia is 84 kilometers away from the border with Myanmar. It is the administrative headquarters of Tinsukia District of Assam, India. Hailed as the business capital of Assam, the place has a heady mix of Assamese, Bengali and Hindi-speaking people. The name of the place comes from the Tinkunia Pukhuri (the lake with three sides) located at the heart of the town. Tinsukia is also a major railhead of Assam. It is one of the fastest developing cities of India and one can travel there either by train or by a flight to Dibrugarh and then a taxi. Tinsukia also acts as a link to all other cities in the north east of India. Presently it houses the biggest railway station of Assam.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Tinsukia had a population of 85,519. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Tinsukia has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 75%. In Tinsukia, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
