Canhas

Canhas is a parish in the district of Ponta do Sol in the Madeira Islands. The population in 2001 is 3,214, its density is 241.7 p/km² and the area is 13.3 km². It is located on a road linking Calheta and Canhas. The main industry are agriculture, fishing and some other industries. It is connected with a road linking. The Atlantic Ocean is to the south. The mountains are to the north. The city of Calheta is bounded to the west and Porto Moniz and São Vicente to the north without having connected roads to those places.

A once essentially agricultural parish, Canhas has gradually been converted into an important economic centre, while retaining its rural feel. Even though agriculture is still a prime industry, civil construction and related industries have conquered a prominent position in the parish.

Canhas has a school, a lyceum, a gymnasium, supermarkets and minimarkets, a church and a square ("praça").
