Biography
David Price studied organ at Trinity College of Music, graduating in 1991. He was also organ scholar at Croydon Parish Church. During his last year at Trinity, he was organ scholar at Rochester Cathedral under Barry Ferguson.[1] He became Assistant Organist of Ely Cathedral under Paul Trepte in September 1991.[1]
In September 1996, Price became Organist and Master of the Choristers at Portsmouth Cathedral.[1] He has presided over major changes in the running of the Music Department at Portsmouth Cathedral (see below).
During his tenth year in Portsmouth in 2007, Price was awarded an honorary doctorate in music by the University of Portsmouth[2] in recognition of his contribution to the musical life of the city, which has included not only work in the daily cathedral services, but also for special civic and national events and University graduations, and the Portsmouth Festivities. In the same year, Price was made an honorary Fellow of the Academy of Saint Cecilia[3] for his contribution to the performance of early music through his work at Portsmouth.
Portsmouth Cathedral
During Price's tenure at Portsmouth, a girls'/youth choir, called Cantate!, has been introduced, and a West Great organ has been installed. A chamber organ was purchased in 2007 with funds from a bequest to the Music Department. In addition, the choir have moved from the Song School in the North Cloister of the cathedral to a new suite in Cathedral House opposite. For more information, see the article on Portsmouth Cathedral.
Price is the son-in-law of the late ex-Bishop of Portsmouth, Kenneth Stevenson.
Recordings
Price's career as a cathedral organist has included several recordings with Ely and Portsmouth. A recording of Amner's choral music is amongst four CDs recorded whilst Price was at Ely, and a reenactment of Nelson's state funeral amongst several recorded at Portsmouth. Price's work at Portsmouth has included the introduction of the gap year scheme for choral scholars; in 2005 the choral scholars recorded[4] a CD for Macmillan Cancer Support.
