Peter Charley was born in 1956 in Deniliquin, in the NSW Riverina. His father, Philip Charley, worked as General Manager of the local radio station, 2QN. Peter's mother, Marie, was a teacher. Charley attended Deniliquin Public School,
The Scots School Albury (1969–1972) andNewington College (1973–1974). [Newington College Register of Past Students 1863–1998 (Syd, 1999) p. 32] He undertook studies in Communications at New York University and studied Spanish Language and Culture at Escuela Dinamico in Antigua, Guatemala, and at The Spanish Academy in Quito, Ecuador.Journalism career
