As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 996 people, 472 households, and 267 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,139.9 people per square mile (442.0/km²). There were 566 housing units at an average density of 647.8/sq mi (251.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.89% White, 0.60% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.00% of the population.There were 472 households out of which 23.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.4% were non-families. 41.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 26.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 27.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $22,829, and the median income for a family was $32,396. Males had a median income of $26,830 versus $17,083 for females. The
