Synanthrope

Synanthrope

Synanthropes (from the Greek "syn-", "together with" + "anthro", "man") are animals, often (but not necessarily) considered pests, which are not domesticated but live near and benefit from humans.

The term is related to studies of ecology and relates to animals who have benefited from the long term selection of species conducted by man over millennia—artificial selection. Examples of synanthropes would be rodents, sparrows, pigeons, lice, and other urban animals. Domesticated animals like cows, goats and dogs do not apply to this category.
