International Stuttering Awareness Day
- International Stuttering Awareness Day
October 22 was designated International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) in 1998. The day is intended to raise the public awareness of the millions of people who have the speech disorder of stuttering, including over 3 million Americans [ [http://www.buffalostate.edu/dailyarchive.xml?tyear=2006&tmonth=10&date=10/20/2006&deid=3183 Sunday, October 22, Is International Stuttering Awareness Day] ] .
ISAD is organised by four organizations:
* American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Special Interest Division #4, Fluency & Fluency Disorders
* European League of Stuttering Associations
* International Fluency Association
* International Stuttering Association
ISAD has includes an online conference, targeted at people with an interest in stuttering, as well as speech-language pathologists and their clients [ [http://info.uwe.ac.uk/news/UWEnews/article.asp?item=1121 UWE academic takes part in online stuttering conference] ] .
Increasing awareness of stuttering can lead to early intervention, so that young children can receive treatment to achieve a level of speech that doesn't require conscious management [ [http://www.canada.com/topics/bodyandhealth/story.html?id=f7a5bfb8-1f9a-4e1c-bfc8-99e773e42a3f&k=49255 Help for stuttering kids] ] .
