Trevor Lucas

Trevor Lucas

Trevor George Lucas (December 251943 - February 4 1989) was an influential folk artist, a member of Fairport Convention and one of the founders of Fotheringay. He mainly performed as a guitarist and vocalist but also produced many albums and wrote for the film industry toward the end of his career.

Biography

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Lucas originally learned to play the guitar in order to help with his dyslexia. In his youth, Lucas studied to become a carpenter and performed nights at local clubs in Melbourne. He released his first two recordings in Australia before moving to England in 1965 with his first wife, Cheryl. There he worked as a solo artist and accompanist at various folk clubs. In 1967 Lucas joined the band Eclection -- other members included Kerrilee Male, Georg Kajanus (as George Hultgreen), Michael Rosen and Gerry Conway (musician) -- as the bass player and continued playing with them until their eventual breakup in 1969.

Lucas was dating the lead singer of Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny in 1969 when he appeared on their album "Unhalfbricking". The two formed the band Fotheringay after Sandy left Fairport Convention in 1969, Lucas playing acoustic guitar but only produced one album before the band broke up the following year. From about 1969 to 1972 Trevor worked with various groups including some of the former members of Fotheringay.

Lucas was helping Fairport Convention with their album "Rosie" in 1973 when he joined the band. On September 20, 1973 Trevor and Sandy got married and shortly after Sandy rejoined Fairport Convention. In Late 1975 Fairport started a large promotional tour and shortly afterwards both Sandy and Trevor left the band.

In April of 1978 Sandy fell down a flight of stairs and died leaving Trevor to raise their newborn daughter, Georgia, by himself. Shortly after her death Lucas moved back to Australia with Georgia. There he married again and fathered a son (Clancy) with his third wife Elizabeth. In the 1980s, Lucas started producing more albums and later started working on scores from the film industry. In 1985 he returned to England to work on a tribute album to Sandy Denny.

In 1989, Trevor Lucas died of a heart attack in his sleep, in Sydney, Australia. His children were all left in the care of his wife Elizabeth.
