The "
Chicago Sun-Times " broke a story in October 2006 that Joseph Acevedo for two years, has been living on disability pay because he says he hurt his back trying to remove a pipe while working for the city water department. His doctor said he could go back to work last January 2006, though in a less physically demanding job.But Joseph Acevedo Jr. remained off -- collecting $3,600 a month from taxpayers -- because the city hasn't found him a new job. "I can't go back to the same job. I'm just waiting for a job to open up," Acevedo told a reporter before slamming the door of his Southwest Side apartment. Acevedo, is among dozens of workers collecting disability payments from the city for months -- sometimes years -- after doctors cleared them to return to work in less-strenuous jobs, a "Chicago Sun-Times" investigation has found.
