Alathur is a small village in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu in India. It has a population of about 10,000. Alathur is 8km from Pattukkottai via vadesri route to Mannargudi. The main occupation is agriculture. It is the largest village in Madukkur Union of Thanjavure District.

There are nine streets and one Govt. higher secondary school, one Government elementary school, and one girls' Government high school. The village also has a few English Elementary schools. The village has Primary Health center, Vetnenary center and Laxmi Vila Bank, mobile phone towers such as Reliance, General, post office, rice mills, shopping complex and markets.

Population

The population is majority of Musukuntha Vellalar and then other communities of Chettiars, Ampalakarars and Schedule caste. The literacy level is about 90%, having high number of people working in abroad such as Singapore, gulf countries, major income from foreign employment and Coconut farms.

Geography

There are many famous temples located in this village such as [the famous VEERANAR kovil] 32 villages of Musukuntha vellalar belonging musukuntha nathar sivan kovil] , Thirumeni amman temple,Renganathar temple, Pilliyar kovil and sivankovil. The populated part of the village is major divided into four steert namely melatheru (Raja theru), therkitheru, naddutheru and vadakitheru which means west street(king of street) south, middle street and north street and then surrounded by 5 streets such as Vadugan kuthagai, Anna Nagar Ambedgar nagar, Chinnwadi and Ottpathai.

This village is originally constituted by Alathur and Mahadevapuram each of 700 acres and later become one village of Alathur 1400 acres. It is surrounded by Alampallam, sembaloore, mullur pattikadu, thalikottai, pulavanji, Ambalapattu.

A branch of Kallanikalvai (a canal from Cavery River) is in the heart of the village and it is surrounded irrigation tanks such as pudukulam, pudu lake, Veeranar kulam, Sivan kovil kulam, Chetti kulam, oddai , nara panai etc.
