19th century

* 1881–1899 - Beginning of the Mahdist War against the United Kingdom and Egypt.

20th century

* 1899–1955 - Sudan ruled by the Anglo-Egyptian condominium.
* 1955 - First Sudanese Civil War begins.
* 1 January 1956 - Sudan achieves independence.
* 1958 - General Ibrahim Abboud stages a military coup against the elected government.
* 1962 - Civil war spreads to Southern Sudan led by the Anyanya separatist movement.
* October 1964 - October Revolution overthrows Abboud's regime.
* May 1969 - Gaafar Nimeiry leads a military coup.
* 1971 - Attempted Communist coup against Nimeiry fails and the leaders executed.
* 1972 - the Addis Ababa Agreement between the Sudanese government and the Anyanya creates a self-governing region in the south of the country.
* 1978 - Oil discovered in Bentiu.
* 1983
** Second Sudanese Civil War begins between government forces and the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) led by John Garang.
** President Nimeiry introduces Sharia law.
* 1985 - Nimeiry deposed and the Transitional Military Council is set up.
* 1986 - Sadiq al-Mahdi becomes Prime Minister in a coalition government following elections.
* 1988 - The Democratic Unionist Party drafts a cease-fire with the SPLA but is is not implemented.
* 1989
** government overthrown by a coup.
** 30 June - Omar al-Bashir assumes the office of president.
* 16 October 1993 - Omar al-Bashir appointed president.
* 1995 - Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak blames Sudan for an attempted assassination.
* 20 August 1998 - The Al-Shifa pharmaceutical factory destroyed by United States cruise missiles.
* 1999
** a state of emergency declared by President Bashir following a power struggle with Hassan al-Turabi.
** Oil exports from Sudan begin.
* 2000
** September
*** the Governor of Khartoum bans women working in public places.
*** President Bashir meets the leaders of the National Democratic Alliance for the first time.
** December - Bashir re-elected for a five year term as president.

21st century

* 2001
** February - Hassan al-Turabi arrested after his party signs a memorandum with the SPLA.
** March - United Nations World Food Programme struggles to feed the millions facing starvation.
** April - SPLA threatens to attack foreign oil workers.
** June - peace talks in Nairobi break down.
** July - Egypt and Libya propose a peace plan for Sudan.
** September - UN lifts sanctions against Sudan.
** October - Senator John Danforth appointed U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan.
** November - United States imposes sanctions on Sudan.
* 2002
** January - ceasefire agreed between the government and the SPLA.
** 20 July - the Machakos Protocol ends the 19-year civil war.
* 2003
** February - beginning of the Darfur conflict.
* 2004
** January - Army moves into Darfur to quell the rebellion; hundreds of thousands of refugees flee into neighbouring Chad.
** March - a UN official accuses pro-government Janjaweed militias of carrying out systematic killings in Darfur.
** September - US Secretary of State Colin Powell describes the Darfur killings as genocide.
* 2005
** 9 January - Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the SPLA and the government.
** March - UN Security Council authorises sanctions against those who violate the Darfur ceasefire.
** June - Hassan al-Turabi freed
** 9 July - John Garang sworn in as vice-president.
** 1 August - Garang killed in a plane crash; he is succeeded by Salva Kiir Mayardit.
** September - a power-sharing government is established.
** October - autonomous government formed in Southern Sudan.
* 2006
** May - Government signs a peace accord with the Darfur rebel group, the Sudan Liberation Movement.
** October - Jan Pronk, head of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, expelled from the country.
** November - African Union peacekeepers stay in Darfur for a further six months.
* 2007
** May - US President George W Bush places fresh sanctions on Sudan.
** 31 July - United Nations Security Council Resolution 1769 authorises 26,000 peacekeepers for Darfur.
** August–September - 2007 Sudan floods
** November - Sudanese teddy bear blasphemy case: a British teacher is imprisoned for naming a teddy bear Muhammad.
