- Addis Ababa Agreement (1972)
The The Addis Ababa Agreement, also know as the Addis Ababa Accord, was a series of compromises in 1972, aimed at appeasing the leaders of the insurgency in southern Sudan after the first Sudanese Civil War proved costly to the government in the North. Autonomy was granted to Southern Sudan. There followed a decade of relative peace. In 1983 this agreement was cut off by the former president of Sudan, Gaafar Nimeiry, when he imposed Shari'a throughout the country.
