Jonathan Hager

Jonathan Hager

Jonathan Hager is the founder of Hagerstown, Maryland, United States. He was born in the Westphalia region of Germany and volunteered to fight in the French and Indian War.

History

Not too much has been said about Jonathan Hager's early childhood, education, and other aspects of his early life. What is known is that he came to the American colonies in 1736 and arrived at a port in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He decided to settle in Maryland. About three years later, on June 5, 1739, he bought 200 acres from the colony's proprietor, Charles Calvert. Calvert was offering substantial sections of land for relatively cheap prices for those who were willing to settle the western frontier. Many explorers turned down the deals, but Jonathan Hager took full advantage. He placed a house on his land and named it "Hager's Fancy," now known as the [http://www.hagerhouse.org/ Hager House and Museum] (in Hagerstown City Park).
