website_name = Lanesborough SchoolLanesborough School is an independent, junior preparatory school in
Guildford ,Surrey . The school was established in 1930 and acts as the choir school forGuildford Cathedral . It has been the junior school for the Royal Grammar School since 1978.History
Lanesborough Preparatory School was founded in 1930 by Messrs Joe Inglis and Brodie Walker., both former assistant masters at Dulwich College. The initial advertisement stated that “Boys will be prepared for Public Schools and the Royal Navy”.
The school opened in January 1930 with 19 pupils. By the end of the year this number had grown to 55, six of whom were boarders. The school, however, very quickly became a day school only. The fees were then £10-10s per term!
In September 1949 Messrs Inglis and Walker were joined by Mr Stuart Swayne as a joint headmaster. Mr Swayne had previously been an assistant master at the school before the war and again joined the school in 1946, after serving in the armed forces during the war.
Mr Walker retired in 1950 and Mr Inglis in 1953. Mr Swayne then became the sole headmaster and remained as such until his retirement in 1975. The headmastership then passed to Mr Peter Halket until 1978 when Lanesborough became the junior School for the Royal Grammar School.
The School was expanded in 1951 when a pre-school department was opened at Braganza, a nearby house.
Lanesborough School joined the Choir Schools’ Association in 1983. [cite web
