Azerbaijani presidential election, 2008

A presidential election will be held in Azerbaijan on 15 October 2008. The incumbent Ilham Aliyev was nominated by the New Azerbaijan Party for a second term on 3 August 2008. Musavat, the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party and the Azerbaijan Democratic Party have announced their boycott of the election due to unfair conditions. [http://www.rferl.org/content/Azerbaijani_Election_Campaign_Opens/1200756.html "Azerbaijani Presidential Election Campaign Opens"] , Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, 17 September 2008.] Each of the candidates had to collect 40.000 support signatures. There is doubt that all registered candidates were able to present this high number of supporters.

Campaigning officially began in mid-September. The candidates are limited to a 4 week campaigning period by law. According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the media (state-owned and private) has showed bias in favor of Aliyev's candidacy.

The elections will be observed by more than 500 international observers, mostly from the OSCE/ODIHR.

Since 1993 no election in Azerbaijan was held according to the international democratic standards of the OSCE/ODIHR.
