routes_of_administration =Benactyzine is an
anticholinergic drug. It is a glycolic acid ester, related to other drugs such as the piperidinyl benzilates and3-Quinuclidinyl benzilate but with much less potent anticholinergic effects.Benactyzine has been used as an
antidepressant , [McLaughlin B, Rickels K, Abidi M, Toro R. Meprobamate-benactyzine (Deprol) and placebo in two depressed outpatient populations. "Psychosomatics". 1969 Mar-Apr;10(2):73-81.] however its use for this application is limited by anticholinergic side effects such asdry mouth andnausea , and at high doses it can cause more severe symptoms such asdeliriant andhallucinogenic effects. Consequently it is no longer widely used in medicine, although it is still a useful drug for scientific research.References
