Graeme Cairns

Graeme Cairns

Graeme Cairns is a New Zealand musician, artist, and political candidate. He is perhaps best known for his role as "Laird McGillicuddy", chief of the Clan McGillicuddy, and as the only-ever leader of the Clan's satirical McGillicuddy Serious political party. The party was founded in 1984, a year after Cairns unsuccessfully stood for Mayor of Hamilton. It became one of the better-known political parties in New Zealand, although it never won seats in Parliament. In addition to his political role, Cairns has been active in promoting "fringe art" such as street theatre.

He also plays in The Big Muffin Serious Band, which commenced playing approximately 1984. Their first album was called "Jabberwocky Goes To Town" and resounds with humour and frenetic ukulele fueled covers of such classic songs as "Don't Go In The Basement" , "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" and "Johnny B. Goode".
