Janice Kim is a professional go player,
author , and business owner. She was born inIllinois in 1969 , and grew up inNew Mexico . As a teenager, she studied go in Korea underJeong Soo-hyon (9-dan). She represented the US in the firstWorld Youth Go Championship in 1984, placing third; in 1986 she played for the US again and won the event. In 1987 she became the first Westerner to be accepted by theHanguk Kiwon as a pro; she remains one of only three western females ever to attain professional status (with Svetlana Shikshina andDiana Koszegi ). She holds a bachelor's degree fromNew York University .In 1997, she created [http://www.samarkand.net Samarkand] , an online store for go-related items. In 2003, she was promoted to a 3-Dan professional go player. Kim is the author of the "Getting Go" articles that accompany installments of
Hikaru No Go , amanga about a boy who releases the spirit of a famous go player, in the American magazineShonen Jump . She also writes occasionally for [http://www.usgo.org/e-journal.html The American Go E-Journal] .On April 25,2008 she participated in the sixth season of the World Poker Tour. She finished in fourth taking home $11,125.
