Ipperwash Provincial Park is a provincial park on the shores of southern Lake Huron in Lambton County, Ontario.
Located near Grand Bend, the 56 hectare, or 140 acre, park was established in 1936 and contains a long sandy beach on the lakeshore, as well as rare flowers and sand dunes. Wildlife include migrating jaegers, scoter, grebe and Brant geese.
Ipperwash Crisis
The Stoney Point First Nation claims the park contains a native burial ground. The status of the park, along with the adjacent military facility at the former Camp Ipperwash led to a violent protest in September 1995 that resulted in the death of Dudley George. The park remains closed to this day due to the land dispute; it is unclear when, or if, it will reopen to the public.
On December 20 2007, the Ontario government [http://www.nativeaffairs.jus.gov.on.ca/english/news/2007/dec20nr_07.html announced] that Ippwerwash Provincial Park will be returned to the Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation.
