Haim Gouri

Haim Gouri (Hebrew: חיים גורי, born 1923) is an Israeli poet, novelist, journalist, and documentary filmmaker.

Biography

Haim Gouri was born in Tel Aviv. In 1941, Gouri joined the Palmach. In the summer of 1947, he was sent to Hungary and Czechoslovakia to organize the transfer of Holocaust survivors to Palestine. Gouri fought in the Six-Day War and served as an education officer in Sinai during the Yom Kippur War. In 1950-52, he studied Hebrew literature, philosophy and French culture at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Awards

Gouri was awarded the Bialik Prize for Literature in 1975 and the Israel Prize for Poetry in 1988. The film "The 81st Blow", which he wrote, co-produced, and co-directed, was nominated for the 1974 Academy Award for Documentary Feature.
