Football in Australia can refer to several different sports, however the use of the word "Football" is different in areas, see Football (word) for more information:

*Australian rules football — The national competition and main governing body is the Australian Football League (AFL). See also Australian rules football in Australia
*Rugby league — Governed in Australia by the Australian Rugby League. The main competition is the National Rugby League (NRL). See also Rugby league in Australia.
*Rugby union — In Australia the sport is governed by the Australian Rugby Union body. The major sub-national competition is Super 14. See also Australian Rugby Championship and Rugby union in Australia.
*Association football — Also known in Australia as "soccer". The governing body is Football Federation Australia and the main club competition is the A-League. See also Association football in Australia.
*American football and Canadian football — Generally known in Australia as "gridiron". The ruling body in Australia is Gridiron Australia.
*Gaelic football — The governing body is the Gaelic Football & Hurling Association of Australasia
