- Vettones
The Vettones were one of the pre-Roman
Celt ic peoples of theIberian Peninsula (the RomanHispania , modernSpain andPortugal ), dwelling in the northwestern part of the "meseta"—the high central upland plain of theIberian peninsula —the region where the modern Spanish provinces ofÁvila andSalamanca are today, as well as parts of Zamora, Toledo, Cáceres and also border areas of modern Portuguese territory. Roman authors recognized the cohesion of cultural features and called the tribe the "Vettones". Some of their most notable legacies today include "verracos de piedra", which are stone markers of unknown use, and possibly the game ofCalva , which dates to the time of their influence. They are not to be confused with the "Vettonenses", inhabitants of Vettona (today's
Bettona in Umbria).ee also
