comments =Florida wine refers to
wine made fromgrape s grown in the U.S. state ofFlorida . Wine grapes were grown in Florida earlier than anywhere else in theUnited States . The first wine grapes were planted in the16th century by Spanish missionaries for the production ofsacrament al wine forChristian religious ceremonies. Because of the tropical climate andgrapevine disease s, particularlyPierce's disease , "vitis vinifera " does not grow well in Florida. In the 1930s, researchers at theUniversity of Florida helped develop new hybrid grape varieties specifically suited for Florida's climate, includingStover ,Blanc Du Bois ,Swanee andMiss Blanc .
