The Far Eastern University Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS) has been considered as one of the Philippine's lead producers of prominent television and radio broadcasters, writers, actors, directors, including professionals in the field of science, such as biology, psychology, and technologists. Situated within the Far Eastern University, Manila Campus, and currently headed by Dr. Jaime An Lim as the institute's dean, the IAS continues to educate students within the field of their interest related to language, literature, mass communications, information technology, life sciences and political science.

History of Institute of Arts and Sciences

The Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS) is among the University's pioneering academic arms. The Institute began its teaching commitments as far back as 1919 under the name Far Eastern College, which in 1928 merged with another educational establishment, the Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance. The merger was what produced the Far Eastern University.

In 1934, the University decided to call its colleges "institutes" to differentiate itself from other educational establishments which called its teaching arms "colleges" or "faculties." The University's division that was then offering Liberal Arts and pre-Law courses came to be known as Far Eastern University - Institute of Arts and Sciences.

The Institute had 555 students when FEU reopened in 1946, which was after World War II. Just like many other establishments in Manila, Far Eastern University was occupied by Japanese soldiers during the war, thus disrupting the University's noble mission of helping educate the Filipinos. Moreover, as soon as the invading soldiers seized the University, they burned and destroyed its records, books, and most of its facilities. With courage, however, and despite the death of Dr. Nicanor Reyes Sr., the University founder, in the hands of the Japanese, FEU reopened and started its rehabilitation immediately after the war. This was in the third quarter of the school year 1945-1946, when American liberation units still held offices in some portions of the FEU campus.

The Institute population has grown enormously since 1940's to over 9,000 every school year. To offer its students the best in learning opportunities, Institute has kept pace with its population growth by staffing its faculty with the best tutors in their fields and continuously expanding and updating its equipment and facilities. It has 396 faculty members as of June 2003.

The Institute now has 12 curricular offerings. Aside from those 12 majors, IAS also serves as the preparatory ground for two years for students desiring to take up Medical Technology or Physical Therapy. The Institute's prestige does not lie in its enrolment and modern facilities alone but on the leadership of its graduates here and abroad. As it offers a truly liberal education, the Institute itself has also achieved a deregulated status.

Francisco M. Africa, author and educator, was the first IAS dean. He retired in 1956 and was honoured with the title "Dean Emeritus" of the Institute. Writer-artist Alejandro R. Roces succeeded Dean Africa. Prof. Roces would have served the Institute and the University much longer had he not been named Secretary of Education by then President Diosdado Macapagal. After Dean Roces, Dr. Josephine Cojuangco Reyes, an IAS alumna herself who took postgraduate studies at Teachers' College, Columbia University, charted the Institute's operations. She later became FEU president and Prof Nicanor B. Agudo, a distinguished thespian and highly engaging educator, was tapped to oversee the Institute.

Dr. Wilson F. Faderon took over Dean Agudo upon the latter's retirement. A University of the Philippines alumnus who finished his doctorate under a special program between the UP Los Baños and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA, Dean Faderon headed the Institute for almost a decade, then moved on to other concerns. Prof. Angel O. Abaya was chosen to take over IAS reins. Dean Abaya was an alumnus of Ateneo de Manila University and had two masteral degrees (one from the Ateneo, the other from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, USA). Unfortunately, he passed away on February 11, 2003 due to a heart ailment and with his untimely death, the reins of the Institute were passed on to Dr. Zenaida S. Martinez as Associate Dean. Academic Programs

The following are current course offerings of Far Eastern University - Institute of Arts and Sciences

English Language is an innovative 4-year program dedicated to teaching the English language, exposing the students to language research and information technology, and making them aware of the function of language in society and its role in the world today.

Literatureis a 4-year course designed to train future practitioners in creative writing, reportage, literary scholarship, criticism and other related areas by enhancing their aesthetic sense, cross-cultural literacy and appreciation for meaningful endeavors in life and in the workplace.

Mass Communicationis a 4-year course that provides the students with a general exposure to theories and practice in mass media, including broadcasting, print, theater arts, cinema, and advertising.

Political Scienceis a 4-year course on the theory and practice of politics and governance. The course prepares students for law school or for higher education in public administration, government administration and international studies.

Biology is a 4-year course designed to broaden the students' knowledge and skills in the biological sciences and to prepare them to pursue further courses in the medical profession or advanced studies in biology.
Psychologyis a 4-year course which provides students with an understanding of human behavior and of psychology as a scientific discipline. The course promotes skills in scientific research and provides insights into the influence of psychology on contemporary thoughts and industry practice.
