According to the
United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 1.4square mile s (3.6km² ), all of it land. It is the birthplace of legendary blues musician Muddy Waters.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 2,486 people, 820 households, and 620 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,774.2 people per square mile (685.6/km²). There were 875 housing units at an average density of 624.5/sq mi (241.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 29.69% White, 69.19% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.32% Asian, and 0.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.97% of the population.There were 820 households out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.9% were married couples living together, 32.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.40.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 83.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $23,081, and the median income for a family was $24,911. Males had a median income of $25,729 versus $17,065 for females. The
