Village of Stockton was founded in 1853, and incorporated in 1857 by a man called J. B. Stockton. Mr. Stockton, William Springer, and William Davison platted out the town in reminice of a town in New York. From there the town grew, at one point we had a broom factory, a train depot, a lumberyard, a flour mill, a postoffice, a hotel, and a few general merchandise stores. Today we have an antique store, a saloon, a cafe, a post office, and a gas station.
Highway 14 runs West-East through town and Winona County Road 23 runs North-South. We are a small town with a few industrial areas and Main Street has all commercial areas. People like living here because it feels like your part of the country living, but still have community pride. We have Stockton First Responders, Stockton Area Promotional Group, 4-H group, Seniors Citizen room, and Oakland Cemetery Association to keep busy. We have scenic hiking trails, and good bluffs for rock climbing, there is also the trout fishing too!
Flood
There have been two major floods in this area; in 1991, and the most recent occurring in August, 2007. In the 2007 flood, the area received more than two feet of rain during one week; seventeen inches within the twenty-four hours preceeding the flooding of both creeks. The extent of the damage required the National Guard to come and help provide initial security and emergency clean up. City residents and volunteers from as far as Idaho, Texas, California, and Alabama quickly addressed the immediate clean up and served as a positive example for the entire region. Despite some semblance of recovery within two weeks, many houses were damage beyond the point of repair and efforts are still underway to help the homeless.
