Detective Sergeant Frederick William Fairfax GC, (bornJune 17 ,1917 ,Westminster ,London ) won theGeorge Cross [ [http://www.gc-database.co.uk/recipients/FairfaxFW.htm George Cross Database Recipient ] ] for his heroism in chasing the armed robbersDerek Bentley andChristopher Craig . The pair had broken into a warehouse inCroydon and were pursued by Fairfax onto the roof of the building. The police officer grabbed Bentley and the sixteen year old Craig fired at him, grazing his shoulder. Despite his injury, the unarmed Fairfax chased Bentley and managed to arrest and subdue him. More officers arrived at the scene and ConstableSidney Miles scaled the roof, only to be shot dead by Craig. Craig jumped from the roof after expending his ammunition, injured himself upon landing and was arrested. The award of the medal was announced in the London Gazette of the 6th of January 1953, as were the George Medals awarded to Police ConstablesNorman Harrison andJames McDonald . Police ConstableRobert Jaggs was given theBritish Empire Medal and Police Constable Miles was posthumously awarded theQueen's Police Medal for Gallantry .
