Frederick Wheeler (architect)

Frederick Wheeler (architect)

Frederick Wheeler (1853–1931) (FRIBA) designed St Paul's Studios on Talgarth Road, London, W14 in 1890 which have much in common with the hundreds of other domestic studios constructed towards the end of the 19th century. The huge cheval-glass studio windows with glazed vaults excite interest despite the unpromising site, sandwiched between the District Line and the Talgarth Road.

James Gunter the developer of West Brompton fame financed this splendid terrace, now Grade II listed, that was `specially designed to suit the requirements of bachelor artists and with accommodation for a housekeeper on the lower floor'; at a total cost of £8100 for the terrace. In 2003, one of these studios, once the home of Dame Margot Fonteyn, was on the market with Marsh and Parsons at £1,100,000 - exactly 1,000 times the cost of its original construction. In 2007, [http://www.hotproperty.co.uk/sales/property_search/details/1045198/5821806.htm another] was on the market for £1,200,000.

It was thought that Wheeler also designed nearby Colet House, but recent research shows that it was probably Fairfax Blomfield Wade-Palmer FRIBA (1851-1919).
