Portuguese Second Division

Portuguese Second Division

The Portuguese Second Division (formerly called "Second Division B") is the third level of the Portuguese football league system.

Since the 2005-06 season, the division has been split into four geographical zones, each with 14 clubs:

Historically, the competition was divided into two zones (Northern and Southern), before a new Central Zone was added.

Competition

During the course of a season each club plays all the other in its league twice, once at their home stadium and once at their opponent's, for a total of 26 games.

Then, in the Second Stage, the winner of Serie A plays the winner of Serie B to determine the team promoted to the League of Honour. The same happens to Serie C and D winners.

The last three of all the series are relegated to the Third Division for a number of 12 relegated teams.

Prior to the 1990-1991 season and the creation of the Liga de Honra, the Second Division was the second level of the Portuguese pyramid. The winners of three series would win promotion to top level, and would dispute a mini-tournament for the title of Second Division Champion. In most years, a similar mini-tournament, called "liguilha" with the runners-up of each series and the 4th worst placed of the First Division would contest the remaining place at the higher level.
