Saun dreamed about becoming a designer since she was a small girl. In 1988, she graduated from
Rutgers University , after which she became involved with the Air Force. Saun claims no city in particular as her hometown because of her travel with the Air Force. In 1994, however, she moved to New York City, in search of better opportunities in the fashion designing world.Saun later moved to
Hollywood, California , where she made many celebrity contacts; she was chosen byQueen Latifah to design Latifah's dress for the 2000Oscars .Despite her many contacts in the entertainment world, Saun went mostly unnoticed until she was chosen to participate on the first season of the reality show "
Project Runway ", which debuted in theUnited States onDecember 1 ,2004 . On the show, Saun described her designs as rock-star like.For the final competition of "Project Runway" at New York's 2005 Olympus
Fashion Week , Kara Saun came in second. During the Bryant Park finale, Kara Saun came under fire from producers for accepting shoes to use in her designs without paying for them per the Project Runway contract. Despite presenting a receipt for the shoes at a discounted price, Saun was told that producers were giving her the option of having the models wear the shoes but not having them included as a component of the design or having the models walk barefoot. Some fans pointed out a supposed hypocrisy in her justification for using the shoes given Saun's criticism of her fellow competitorWendy Pepper .In 2005, Saun became costume designer for the
UPN sitcom "Eve" as well as for the The WB series "What I Like About You", starringAmanda Bynes andJennie Garth . Saun created gold dresses for an "America's Next Top Model " campaign, and designed for Chilli and T-Boz's UPN show "R U the Girl ". Kara Saun was also on theStyle Network 's show "How Do I Look?
