commons=The Carretera De Samana ("Spanish for:" Santo Domingo-Samana Highway) is the newest addition to the Dominican Republic national highway system. The actual construction of the highway started in the 2005 by the Secretary of Public Works and Communication (SEOPC). In November 2007 the highway started final paving, since the landscape is difficult and the financing has been a major issue the project had stalled on several occasions thus delaying the project. It was finished by early February 2008.The new two lane highway is expected to convert Samaná to another touristic hub in the Dominican Republic. The highway will reduce a trip from Santo Domingo to Samaná from 4 hours and 30 minutes to less than 2 hours. The highway is expected to reduce the traffic along the
DR-1 which is the present highway used to drive to Samana. The highway starts in the National highway
DR-3 (30 km fromSanto Domingo ) and ends on Cruse Rinco de Monillos, Samaná Province. There are three different toll boths: the first one at the start of the highway from Santo Domingo; the second one in km 18; and the third one was built in La Reforma, right before Samaná.Construction and financing
The construction of this new two-lane roadway was done through private financing which is to be payed with tolls summing up to around 700$ (DOP). Even though is much more expensive than most other highway tolls in the Dominican Republic, it will still save a lot of money due to the fact that an average 4 hours of gasoline is going to be saved. The construction is in its final stages, with some asphalt and signaling missing.
